What code GTW_f228 means

The Gateway — the hub through which the car's controllers talk to each other, and the route software updates take. Codes from here often mean some controller has gone quiet on the bus; the real fault is usually in that controller, not the gateway.

Severity — f

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Software Update Required: Unable to Start Car

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

GTW_f228_icFpgaVersionMismatch

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

Než zavoláte, zkuste dvě věci: podržte obě kolečka na volantu a nechte obrazovku restartovat, a zkontrolujte, jestli vůz nemá čekající aktualizaci a slušné připojení k síti. Někdy se to spraví dokončením té přerušené. Jinak vůz zůstane stát a je potřeba servis.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Software Update Required: Unable to Start Car” and the car will not move off. What happened: inside the instrument cluster sits a programmable FPGA chip that draws the driver's display. The gateway checked which version that chip is running and found it does not match what the rest of the car expects. Because the cluster is the only place the driver sees speed, warnings and vehicle status, Tesla will not release the car for driving until the versions line up. When it happens: around updates. An installation that did not finish or was interrupted by a 12-volt power loss, a cluster replaced without a subsequent version match, occasionally a failed attempt to roll back to an older version. It is not a mechanical fault. What to do: there is nothing to fix yourself; reprogramming the chip is done by a service centre or by a remote install from Tesla. Before you call, try two things: hold both scroll wheels on the steering wheel to restart the screen, and check whether the car has a pending update and a decent network connection. Sometimes completing the interrupted install sorts it. Otherwise the car stays put and service is needed. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
