What code GTW_u013 means

The Gateway — the hub through which the car's controllers talk to each other, and the route software updates take. Codes from here often mean some controller has gone quiet on the bus; the real fault is usually in that controller, not the gateway.

Severity — u

Not a defect. The car is waiting for you — press the brake, close a door, top up a fluid, change a setting.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Key No Longer Inside: Car Will Not Restart

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

Na displeji se objeví „Key No Longer Inside: Car Will Not Restart“ a je to varování, ne závada.

Na ekranie pojawia się „Key No Longer Inside: Car Will Not Restart” i to ostrzeżenie, nie usterka. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Key No Longer Inside: Car Will Not Restart” and this is a warning, not a fault. The car is driving, but the key is no longer in it. What happened: the car is in drive, but on checking it found the key has left the cabin. While you are moving nothing happens — a Tesla will not shut you down in the middle of the road. But once you park and the car goes to sleep, you will not start it again without a key. How it comes about: most often the key stayed with someone who got out along the way. A passenger took the phone with the app and walked off; the card was in a jacket on the back seat that someone carried away. Occasionally it is a phone whose Bluetooth dropped or whose battery died, or a fob with a flat battery — the car stops seeing it and treats that as the key having left. What to do: if you are driving, carry on to where you are going, but do not stop somewhere you cannot get away from. Check whether you actually have the key on you. If you do not, expect to need the second key after parking. If you do have it and the message still came up, it is most likely a flat fob battery or a phone that lost its connection — replace the battery or restart Bluetooth. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
