What code GTW_w005 means

The Gateway — the hub through which the car's controllers talk to each other, and the route software updates take. Codes from here often mean some controller has gone quiet on the bus; the real fault is usually in that controller, not the gateway.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Task stack overflowed

V každém programu má běžící úloha vyhrazený kus paměti, kterému se říká zásobník — ukládá si do něj návratové adresy a dočasné hodnoty. Ta paměť má pevnou velikost. Když se do ní úloha pokusí zapsat víc, než se vejde, přeteče do sousední oblasti. Systém to pozná a zapíše přesně tenhle záznam. Zkontrolujte čekající aktualizaci a nechte ji doběhnout.

System to rozpoznaje i zapisuje dokładnie ten wpis. Sprawdź oczekującą aktualizację i pozwól jej dobiec. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

A driver will never see this code — it is a purely developer-facing record from the vehicle gateway, the unit that brokers communication between the other control units. What happened: a task's stack overflowed. In any program a running task has a reserved block of memory called the stack — it stores return addresses and temporary values there. That memory has a fixed size. When the task tries to write more into it than fits, it spills into the neighbouring area. The system detects this and writes exactly this record. Why programmers watch for it: a stack overflow is serious because it corrupts data that has nothing to do with the task. The consequence then surfaces somewhere else entirely and looks like a random fault. That is why the system has a guard that catches it at the moment it happens rather than when it shows up. What it means for the owner: practically nothing directly visible. The gateway most likely restarted, which may have caused a brief communication dropout — the screen froze for a moment, the app failed to connect briefly. An isolated occurrence means nothing. When to pay attention: when it repeats. Recurring stack overflows are a software fault in the gateway and are resolved with an update, not a repair. Check for a pending update and let it complete. If it still happens afterwards, mention it at a service visit. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
