What code GTW_w087 means

The Gateway — the hub through which the car's controllers talk to each other, and the route software updates take. Codes from here often mean some controller has gone quiet on the bus; the real fault is usually in that controller, not the gateway.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Ano, opravdu — mobilní nabíječka i Wall Connector mají vlastní firmware a Tesla ho aktualizuje přes vůz. Hlásí ho Cybertruck a Model 3.

Was tun: warten.

Zgłaszają go Cybertruck i Model 3.

The screen shows “Charge connector update in progress” and for a while the car can neither charge nor drive. What happened: the car is updating your charger's software. Yes, really — both the Mobile Connector and the Wall Connector have their own firmware, and Tesla updates it through the car. The car acts as an intermediary: it downloads the update and flashes it into the charger over the charging cable. When it starts: according to Tesla's description, once the car has finished charging and the user is not present. It is well thought out — the update runs at a moment when it inconveniences nobody. The only problem arises if you come back to the car before it finishes. What is blocked: Tesla says the car cannot drive or charge while the update runs. That sounds more dramatic than it is — this is minutes, not hours. What to do: wait. Do not unplug the cable and do not try to interrupt the update; an interrupted firmware flash is the most reliable way to destroy a charger. The code clears itself once the update completes. When to pay attention: if the state lasts considerably longer than a few minutes, or repeats at every charge. That suggests the update cannot complete — at which point it is worth trying a different cable and having it checked. Reported by Cybertruck and Model 3.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
