What code GTW_w166 means

The Gateway — the hub through which the car's controllers talk to each other, and the route software updates take. Codes from here often mean some controller has gone quiet on the bus; the real fault is usually in that controller, not the gateway.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Car Needs Service: Charge Speed Reduced

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Car Needs Service: Charge Speed Reduced” and charging runs slower than you are used to. What happened: the gateway counted errors on the communication bus. The code's internal name points straight at it — error count on the vehicle bus. The bus is the wire over which control units send each other messages; when errors appear on it, messages are being corrupted or lost. Why it limits charging in particular: charging is an operation where several units have to talk at once — the charge port, the onboard charger, the battery management, the thermal management. Large amounts of power are being controlled and the system must react continuously to temperature and cell condition. When communication is unreliable, the car would rather reduce power, so it has more time to react and smaller consequences if a message goes missing. What usually causes it: a damaged or chafed bus cable, a corroded connector, moisture in a connector, a unit interfering on the bus, or a poorly executed change to the wiring — typically after fitting accessories or accident repair. What to do: slower charging is annoying but not dangerous. Have the diagnostics read out all the same — bus errors tend to get worse, and then show up in places other than charging speed. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
