What code GTW_w174 means

The Gateway — the hub through which the car's controllers talk to each other, and the route software updates take. Codes from here often mean some controller has gone quiet on the bus; the real fault is usually in that controller, not the gateway.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

12V Battery Needs Service: Replace 12V Battery Soon

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

S dvanáctivoltovou baterií to nesouvisí vůbec.

S dvanásťvoltovou batériou to nesúvisí vôbec. Was der interne Name sagt: etwas anderes.

W starszych Modelach S i X to akumulator ołowiowy o żywotności trzech do czterech lat, który odchodzi często nagle, a zimą wcześniej. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

With this code the sources contradict each other, and it is worth knowing how, so it does not lead you down the wrong path. What the display reports: “12V Battery Needs Service: Replace 12V Battery Soon”. Tesla's own description of the code agrees with that, listing it under the name Replace12VBattery. What the internal name says: something different. It reads TPMShardWarnFrontRight — a hard warning from the tyre pressure monitoring system for the front right wheel. That has nothing to do with the 12-volt battery. How to read this: two independent things — the on-screen message and Tesla's description — point at the 12-volt battery, and only the internal name points elsewhere. The most likely explanation is that the code's meaning shifted between firmware versions and the old name survived somewhere. Go by what you see on the screen. So what most likely applies: the 12-volt battery is at the end of its life. On older Model S and X this is a lead-acid battery good for three to four years, which often fails suddenly and sooner in winter. Without it the car will not wake and will not drive, even with the main battery full. What to do: arrange the replacement, do not put it off, and do not get stranded far from home with it. And when the diagnostics are read, do ask whether anything about tyre pressure is showing too — given the contradiction, it is worth cross-checking. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
