What code GTW_w192 means

The Gateway — the hub through which the car's controllers talk to each other, and the route software updates take. Codes from here often mean some controller has gone quiet on the bus; the real fault is usually in that controller, not the gateway.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The Phase 3 platform of the slave charger is configured for a different vehicle type.

Zgłasza go Tesla Semi.

This code belongs exclusively to the Tesla Semi truck, and you will practically never meet it in our part of the world — which is itself a piece of information worth having. What happened: the gateway found the high-voltage DC link controller running a different firmware version from the one the rest of the vehicle expects. The service description narrows it down — the slave charger's platform is configured for a different vehicle type. What the impact is: Tesla says the vehicle can neither drive nor charge until the mismatch is resolved. It gives the reason directly — to make sure high-voltage battery functionality is not limited by a firmware mismatch. The same logic as the rest of the version mismatch family: better to stop the vehicle than let it operate with units that may not understand each other. When it happens: after an unfinished update, after a unit replacement without a subsequent version match, or when a unit configured for a different vehicle type ends up in the vehicle. What to do: it is resolved exclusively at a service centre or by a remote install from Tesla. Matching firmware between units is not a home job. Why it is here at all: the code appears in the database and a page for it exists, so it is worth knowing what it means — even though it does not occur on passenger cars. Reported by the Tesla Semi.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
