What code HVP_w014 means

The high-voltage protection unit — battery contactors, current measurement and the HVIL safety loop that disconnects high voltage the moment a connector comes loose. These codes turn up after collisions and after service work alike.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

HVP_w014_BmsMiaOnHviFault

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

Co to obvykle znamená: vůz sám sebe odstaví do bezpečného stavu.

Čo to zvyčajne znamená: vozidlo samo seba odstaví do bezpečného stavu.

Kod rzadko stoi sam — zwykle towarzyszą mu inne komunikaty z obszaru baterii i napędu. To diagnostyka serwisowa. Zgłaszają go Model 3, Model S i X od 2021 oraz Model Y.

A driver will not normally see this code on the screen — it is a service record from the car's high-voltage side. What happened: the high-voltage control unit stopped hearing the battery management system (BMS) on its communication bus. “Mia” in the internal name is shorthand for a missing participant — a unit that should report its status regularly has gone silent. Without messages from the BMS, the high-voltage side has no data on cell voltage, temperature or condition, which is everything it uses to decide whether connecting high voltage is safe at all. What it usually means: the car puts itself into a safe state. Depending on the situation that shows up as reduced power, an inability to charge, or the car not moving off at all. This code rarely stands alone — it is usually accompanied by other messages from around the battery and drivetrain. Possible causes: broken or corroded bus wiring, a loose connector at the battery, a loss of power to the BMS, or a fault in the unit itself. It sometimes appears after work on the car, especially around the battery. What to do: there is nothing to try on your own here. A high-voltage system is neither opened nor measured without the proper equipment and training. This is service diagnostics. Reported by Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, and Model Y.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
