What code HVP_w032 means

The high-voltage protection unit — battery contactors, current measurement and the HVIL safety loop that disconnects high voltage the moment a connector comes loose. These codes turn up after collisions and after service work alike.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

HVP_w032_ShuntHwAndBmsMiaFault

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Warns if the HVP detectes both BMS and Shunt MIA while pack contactors closed

If the HVP detectes both BMS and Shunt MIA while pack contactors closed

When either BMS or Shunt is not mia

Alerts if the HV pyro fuse is blown

One of many critical HVP or BMS alert, log data contains the reason

Clears after a pyro loop is completed and meets expectation

Warns if the shunt current reading is not avaialble

Čo sa stalo: riadiaca jednotka vysokého napätia prestala naraz počuť dve veci: riadenie batérie a bočník, teda snímač, ktorým meria prúd tečúci z batérie. Opustite vozovku, ak to ide, a zavolajte odťah.

To ślepa eksploatacja instalacji wysokonapięciowej. Opuść jezdnię, jeśli to możliwe, i wezwij lawetę. Poza wymianą bezpiecznika trzeba znaleźć, dlaczego obie komunikacje zanikły naraz — bywa to okablowanie, złącze albo zasilanie, ale ustali to wyłącznie diagnostyka. Zgłaszają go Model 3 i Model S od 2021.

The screen shows “Vehicle shutting down” and this is one of the most serious codes a Tesla can raise — because its consequence is an irreversible action. What happened: the high-voltage control unit stopped hearing two things at once: the battery management and the shunt, the sensor it uses to measure the current flowing out of the pack. And it happened while the pack contactors were closed, that is, with high voltage connected. Why that is so serious: at that moment high voltage is live and the car has neither a picture of the battery's state nor of how much current is flowing from it. That is blind operation of the high-voltage system. And Tesla's description gives an unambiguous impact: the pyro fuse will blow. What a pyro fuse is: a pyrotechnic charge that physically severs the high-voltage circuit. It is the last line of protection the car has when it cannot disconnect the battery any other way. It works once, and firing it is irreversible — the fuse is then replaced. What to do: the car shuts down and stays put. Do not try to move off and do not attempt restarts. Get off the carriageway if you can and call for recovery. What next: this is not a drive-to-the-workshop matter. Besides replacing the pyro fuse, the reason both communication paths failed at once has to be found — it is usually wiring, a connector or a supply, but only diagnostics will establish that. Reported by Model 3 and Model S from 2021.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
