What code IC_w013 means

The instrument cluster on Model S and X. These codes concern its own state, such as the display overheating.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Instrument Panel Too Hot: Display Is Off

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

IC_w013_OVERTEMP_OFF

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

Driver experiences with code IC_w013

This part is written by you. If you have had code IC_w013, tell us when it appeared, what brought it on and how it ended — for the next person, one such sentence is often worth more than the entire service documentation.

Na displeji se objeví „Instrument Panel Too Hot: Display Is Off“ a přístrojový štít zhasne. Co se stalo: elektronika přístrojového panelu se přehřála nad povolenou teplotu a vypnula se, aby se nepoškodila. Interní název kódu to říká doslova — přehřátí, vypnuto. Co dělat: zapněte klimatizaci a nechte vůz zchladit.

Na ekranie pojawia się „Instrument Panel Too Hot: Display Is Off” i zestaw wskaźników gaśnie. Nazwa wewnętrzna kodu mówi to dosłownie — przegrzanie, wyłączono. W Tesli warto wspomnieć jeszcze o jednym — wstępne schłodzenie kabiny przez aplikację kilka minut przed podejściem do auta rozwiązuje ten problem i komfort naraz. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Instrument Panel Too Hot: Display Is Off” and the instrument cluster goes dark. What happened: the instrument panel electronics got hotter than permitted and switched themselves off to avoid damage. The code's internal name says it in so many words — overtemperature, off. This is not a fault, it is protection. When it happens: in hot summer weather with the car parked in direct sun. The dashboard behind the windscreen reaches temperatures approaching the limit the electronics are designed for, and the display beneath it bakes along with it. It happens most often when you return to a car that has stood for hours in a car park with no shade. What to do: turn on the air conditioning and let the car cool. The display comes back on its own once the temperature falls. It also helps to open the windows briefly and let the hot air out before running the air conditioning at full — the cabin then cools faster. How to prevent it: use cabin overheat protection, a sunshade behind the windscreen, or simply park in the shade. With a Tesla there is one more thing worth mentioning — precooling the cabin from the app a few minutes before you walk out solves this problem and your comfort in one go. When to pay attention: if the message appears in mild weather too, or while driving with the air conditioning on. Then it is not about the outside temperature but about cooling inside the panel, and that deserves a check. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
