What code MCU_u017 means

The Media Control Unit — the computer behind the centre screen. Besides its own faults, everyday driver notices come from here too: empty washer fluid, an open door, a flat key fob battery. Most MCU codes are therefore not a vehicle defect.

Severity — u

Not a defect. The car is waiting for you — press the brake, close a door, top up a fluid, change a setting.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Regenerative Braking Has Been Improved: You May Experience Slightly Stronger Deceleration

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

MCU_u017_RegenChanged

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Regen has been improved (increased) for the dual motor Model S refresh vehicles.

This alert will be shown 3 times for existing user profiles with Regen set to Standard.?

Na displeji se objeví „Regenerative Braking Has Been Improved: You May Experience Slightly Stronger Deceleration“. Proto to upozornění.

Im Display erscheint „Regenerative Braking Has Been Improved: You May Experience Slightly Stronger Deceleration“. Was tun: nichts.

Na ekranie pojawia się „Regenerative Braking Has Been Improved: You May Experience Slightly Stronger Deceleration”. Stąd to ostrzeżenie. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Regenerative Braking Has Been Improved: You May Experience Slightly Stronger Deceleration”. This is neither an error nor a fault warning — it is a notice about a change an update brought. What happened: a software update changed the regenerative braking setting. Tesla strengthened it, so the car now decelerates more when you lift off than it did before. The car tells the driver so the change does not take them by surprise in traffic. Why Tesla reports it: regeneration fundamentally shapes how the car behaves when you come off the accelerator. Anyone used to one-pedal driving has a calibrated feel for it — they know when to lift so they stop in the right place. When the strength of regeneration changes, that feel suddenly does not fit. Hence the notice. An interesting detail: according to the service note this change applied to dual-motor refresh Model S vehicles, and the message appears three times for existing profiles that had regeneration set to Standard. What to do: nothing. There is nothing to repair or configure. Just expect the car to slow slightly more than you are used to when you lift off — a few dozen kilometres and you will be adjusted. If the message keeps reappearing after several drives, restart the screen by holding both scroll wheels on the steering wheel. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
