What code PARK3_w005 means

The newer generation of ultrasonic parking sensors. The codes mean the same as the PARK group.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

PARK3_w005_s2_linCommError

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The PARK electronic control unit (ECU) has issues communicating with this ultrasonic sensor via the local interconnect network (LIN) bus.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

A driver will not usually see this code on the screen, but will recognise it because the parking sensors report nonsense or one of them has gone quiet. What happened: the parking sensor control unit is having trouble communicating with one of the ultrasonic sensors over the LIN bus. What LIN is: a simple, cheap communication bus used in cars to connect things where speed does not matter — parking sensors, mirror and seat adjustment and the like. Unlike the main CAN bus it has a single wire and is slower, but for a sensor reporting a distance a few dozen times a second that is plenty. What it means in practice: a sensor the unit is not talking to is a blind spot. The car may report an obstacle where there is none, or conversely miss the real one. On cars that also use the parking sensors for automatic parking and summon, those features usually disappear entirely. What usually causes it: the sensors sit in the bumper, the most exposed place on the car. Most often it is damage from a knock while parking, water and salt in the connector, a chafed cable, or a sensor painted over after a bumper repair — a classic, and enough to stop it working. What to do: walk the bumper and look for a sensor sitting differently, cracked, or painted over. If everything looks fine from outside, it is the wiring or a connector and belongs in service. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
