What code PCS_a017 means

The Power Conversion System — the combined onboard charger and DC/DC converter. It handles charging from the socket and generating the 12 V supply. These codes mostly show up as slower or interrupted charging.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

The screen shows “Charging stopped - Power lost while charging” and charging stops. What happened: the onboard charger noticed the mains supply disappeared mid-session. This is not a fault in the car — the car is simply describing what happened outside it: the power stopped arriving. The most common causes are mundane. A tripped breaker or RCD, which happens especially when something else is running on the same circuit. A power cut in the house. A cable pulled out or worked loose because someone stepped on it or caught it. A socket that heats up and disconnects. At public stations, simply a restart or an outage. And not least smart plugs and timers that switch charging off on schedule. What to do: start at the breaker and the socket. If the breaker trips repeatedly, reduce the charging current in the car — with home charging from an ordinary socket that is the most common fix. Check whether the socket is warm or discoloured; at that point it is a job for an electrician and should not be dismissed. The good news: the code clears itself once power returns, and the car usually resumes charging without intervention. If it keeps happening at one particular socket, the problem is there, not in the car. Reported by Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, and Model Y.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
