What code PCS_a073 means

The Power Conversion System — the combined onboard charger and DC/DC converter. It handles charging from the socket and generating the 12 V supply. These codes mostly show up as slower or interrupted charging.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

AC voltage is present when not expected (indicates a bad charge cable / EVSE)

Charger detects AC input voltage when not requested for more than five seconds

Charger does not detect AC input voltage when not requested

U veřejných stojanů to bývá porucha stojanu. Co s tím: zkuste nabíjet jinde a jiným kabelem. Hlásí ho Model 3 a Model S.

Opis Tesli interpretuje to jednoznacznie: oznacza to wadliwy kabel ładujący albo stację. Dlaczego to problem: ładowanie ma uzgodniony przebieg. Auto prosi o prąd, ładowarka mu go podaje, a gdy ładowanie się kończy albo przerywa, napięcie znika. Zgłaszają go Model 3 i Model S.

The screen shows “External charging equipment error detected” and this is one of the few codes where the car points its finger straight outwards. What happened: the onboard charger measured AC voltage at its input at a moment when it had not requested any — and it lasted more than five seconds. Tesla's description reads it unambiguously: it indicates a bad charge cable or charging station. Why that is a problem: charging follows an agreed sequence. The car asks for current, the charger supplies it, and when charging ends or is interrupted, the voltage goes away. When voltage arrives unrequested and stays, something on the other side is energising the cable without being asked. That is exactly the situation where the car is entitled to refuse to cooperate — working with a source that does not follow the agreed rules is not safe. What usually causes it: a faulty relay or contactor in the charger that did not open, a damaged cable with a short between conductors, or a cheap charger without proper control. At public stalls it is usually a fault in the stall. What to do: try charging elsewhere and with a different cable. If the car charges without trouble at another station, that confirms the original charger — stop using it. With a home wallbox especially it is worth having an electrician check it: a device energising the cable when it should not is not something to overlook. Reported by Model 3 and Model S.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
