What code PMS_w043 means

The redundant pedal monitoring channel. It watches the same things as PM, but independently — so a single failed part cannot disable the supervision.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

PMS_w043_inconsistentConfig

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The Pedal Monitor (PM) and Gateway (GTW) configuration is inconsistent.

Aby to dělala správně, musí mít stejné nastavení jako brána vozu — vědět, o jaký model jde, jaké má výbavu a jaké prahy platí. Kdy k tomu dochází: prakticky vždy okolo softwaru a servisních zásahů. Nedokončená aktualizace, výměna jednotky bez následného nakonfigurování, přehrání brány, občas i zásah do výbavy vozu.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

A driver will not normally see this code on the screen — it is a service record from the safety monitor watching the accelerator pedal. What happened: the Pedal Monitor unit watches what the accelerator is doing independently of the drive controller. For it to do that correctly, it has to hold the same configuration as the gateway — knowing which model this is, what equipment it has, and which thresholds apply. This code means the configurations of the unit and the gateway do not match. Why that is not a trifle: a monitor running on a different configuration from the rest of the car can evaluate things wrongly. Either it sees a problem where there is none, or — worse — it misses the real one. In a system whose sole job is watching the accelerator, a configuration mismatch is not something to ignore. When it happens: almost always around software and service work. An unfinished update, a unit replaced without subsequent configuration, a gateway re-flash, occasionally changes to the car's equipment. Incidentally, this very code is the proof of what the abbreviation PM stands for — its internal name says Pedal Monitor in so many words. With plenty of other codes the meaning of the abbreviation is only inferred. What to do: matching unit configurations is done by a service centre or a remote update; there is nothing to achieve yourself. Check for a pending update and let it complete; if that does not help, book an appointment. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
