What code RADC_a031 means

The forward radar on older Autopilot cars. These codes mostly report a blocked radar — snow, ice, a sticker or road salt in front of the sensor. Newer Teslas have no radar and rely on cameras alone.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Keď je celý modul natočený len o zlomok stupňa, vo vzdialenosti sto metrov to robí rozdiel niekoľkých metrov — teda rozdiel medzi vaším pruhom a susedným. Hlási ho Cybertruck a Model 3.

To czynność serwisowa wymagająca specjalnego celu i dokładnego ustawienia auta. Samodzielnie nie da się jej wykonać. Zgłaszają go Cybertruck i Model 3.

You can run into this code after a seemingly harmless event — a knock to the front bumper. What happened: the radar is not correctly aligned. Tesla's description lists the reasons: the radar is not seated properly in its bracket, the stack-up is out of spec, or the radar target was out of spec or absent during the test. Why millimetres matter: the radar measures the angle at which the reflected signal comes back. From that it works out whether the vehicle ahead is in your lane or the next one. If the whole module is rotated by a fraction of a degree, at a hundred metres that makes a difference of several metres — the difference between your lane and the adjacent one. Adaptive cruise control would then brake for a car that is not blocking you at all, or fail to brake for one that is. What it means on the road: Tesla's description is unambiguous — radar functions are disabled and Autopilot features with them. This is not a limitation, it is a complete shutdown. When it happens: after an impact to the front of the car, even a minor one. After a bumper replacement or repair. After removing the radar. It takes only a slight bend in the bracket. What to do: Tesla names a specific remedy — the code clears only once the radar alignment routine runs successfully. That is a service procedure requiring a special target and precise positioning of the car. It cannot be done at home. Reported by Cybertruck and Model 3.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
