What code RCM_a103 means

The Restraints Control Module — the controller for airbags, seatbelt pretensioners and crash detection. Codes in this group should never be ignored: they can mean an airbag will not deploy in a collision.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Hlásí ho Model 3 z let 2017–2023 a Model Y.

Zgłaszają go Model 3 z lat 2017–2023 i Model Y.

A driver will not normally see this code on the screen — it is a service record from the restraint control module, the unit that decides about the airbags. What happened: the module has its own inertial measurement unit sensing the car's acceleration and rotation in every axis. From that it recognises whether a crash or a rollover is under way. To measure accurately it has to keep re-zeroing itself — every sensor drifts slightly, and that drift changes with temperature and age. This code means the compensation for the pitch rate has reached its saturation limit. In other words: the sensor has drifted so far there is nothing left to correct it with. Why that matters: if the module has no trustworthy data about the car's motion, it cannot reliably decide when to fire the airbags and the belt pretensioners. And that is a decision made in milliseconds which cannot be taken twice. What Tesla says about it: the description states that the restraint control module may need to be replaced. Clearing the code is tied to a new drive cycle, or to replacing the unit. What to do: the car is drivable and will not restrict you, but the restraint systems may not work as intended. Have it checked — with airbags you do not rely on things sorting themselves out. Reported by Model 3 from 2017–2023 and Model Y.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
