What code RCM2_a004 means

The newer generation of the airbag and restraints module. The codes mean the same as the RCM group; it is by far the largest code group of all, because the module monitors every sensor and every squib separately.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

No Impact.

Was tun: nichts.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

A driver will not see this code on the screen, and it is one of the few cases where Tesla's own description says outright that nothing happened: no impact. What happened: the restraint control module has a crash algorithm that decides about an impact — it evaluates sensor data and fires the airbags if needed. That algorithm woke up. This does not mean there was a crash; it means the module registered something worth checking, and the algorithm started briefly to take a look. It then determined this was not an impact, and logged the fact. What usually triggers it: a deep pothole, a kerb, a speed bump taken too fast, a door slammed hard, being nudged by another car while parked. In short, any jolt producing a spike at the sensors large enough for the algorithm to decide it had better look. Why Tesla logs it at all: it is a useful trace for technicians. When someone brings a car in after an accident, a record of the algorithm waking helps establish when the event occurred, even if the airbags did not deploy. What to do: nothing. The airbags are fine, the warning light is off, the car is unrestricted. The code is an informational record and there is nothing in it for a driver to act on. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
