What code RCM2_a074 means

The newer generation of the airbag and restraints module. The codes mean the same as the RCM group; it is by far the largest code group of all, because the module monitors every sensor and every squib separately.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Was das Steuergerät tut: Es legt den Kreis still.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Front passenger safety restraint system issue” and the airbag warning light is probably on. What happened: there is a short to ground in the circuit of the front passenger airbag's active vent. What an active vent is: a clever piece of engineering most people never hear about. An airbag is not only supposed to inflate — it also has to deflate in a controlled way, so it decelerates the body progressively instead of acting like a trampoline. The active vent is a controlled opening through which the gas escapes, and the module uses it to vary how firm the airbag becomes. According to the passenger's weight, the severity of the impact, whether the belt is buckled. Why that matters: it is precisely this vent that lets one airbag be softer for a slight person and firmer for a large one. Without it the airbag works in a single mode and the protection is coarser than it was designed to be. What the module does: it disables the circuit. With a short in a pyrotechnic circuit that is standard practice — the risk of an unintended deployment outweighs the loss of function. What usually causes it: a damaged connector behind the dashboard, wiring pinched after something was fitted underneath, corrosion. It appears after dashboard repairs and interior work. What to do: this belongs exclusively in a service centre, like everything to do with airbags. The car drives, but the passenger's protection is not what it should be. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
