What code RCM2_a495 means

The newer generation of the airbag and restraints module. The codes mean the same as the RCM group; it is by far the largest code group of all, because the module monitors every sensor and every squib separately.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

A driver will not usually see this code on the screen directly, but the airbag warning light is probably on. What happened: the pressure impact sensor in the rear left door failed initialisation. In other words: at startup the sensor did not report in as it should, and the restraint control module cannot treat it as functional. What a pressure sensor in a door is: an unusual but clever way of detecting a side impact. Inside the door card there is a sealed cavity with a pressure sensor in it. When something strikes the door, the card deforms and the air pressure inside rises sharply. That spike is faster and less ambiguous than an accelerometer signal — which is why it is used for side impacts, where milliseconds matter and only a few centimetres separate the impact from the occupant. What it means: without a working sensor the module has no reliable source of side-impact information on that side. The side and curtain airbags on the rear left may not work as intended. What usually causes it: a loose or damaged connector in the door, a broken conductor in the grommet between the door and the body — which flexes every time the door opens and is a classic fatigue point — or a faulty sensor. What to do: this belongs exclusively in a service centre, like everything to do with airbags. The car drives, but the protection is not complete. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
