What code TAS_a003 means

Tesla Air Suspension — the air chassis: compressor, valves, ride height sensors. These codes show up as the car being unable to raise or level the body, or reporting a loss of pressure. On Model S and X this is a common age-related fault.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

TAS_a003_SWAssertion

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

Innymi słowy, w zdecydowanej większości przypadków to moment, który mija, zanim zdążysz go zauważyć. Zgłaszają go Cybertruck, Model 3 od 2024, Model S i Model X.

This code concerns the air suspension and a driver will not normally see it on the screen — it is an internal service record. What happened: the air suspension control software hit one of its own check conditions at runtime and the check failed. In programming terms this is a failed assertion: the program continually verifies that its internal values make sense, and logs it when one of those checks fails. It is not a fault in a spring or the compressor — it is a report from the software. What is unusual about this code: it clears itself automatically after ten milliseconds, provided no further failures follow. In other words, in the vast majority of cases it is a moment that has passed before you could notice it. It still gets written to the service log. When it is worth attention: when it appears frequently, or when it comes with symptoms you can see — the car not levelling, one side sinking while parked, the suspension dropping into a limp mode, the compressor running longer than usual. An isolated record with no visible symptom usually means nothing. What to do: if the car behaves normally, there is nothing to do. If it repeats with visible symptoms, mention it at a service visit; recurring software assertions are often the first trace of something just beginning. Reported by Cybertruck, Model 3 from 2024, Model S and Model X.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
