What code THC_w0237 means

Thermal management — air conditioning, the high-voltage cabin heater, the coolant loop and its level. These codes show up as weak heating, limited defrosting or a low coolant level message.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

A driver will not usually see this code on the screen, but will recognise it in winter because the heating is not doing what it should. What happened: the high-voltage cabin heater has a problem with its own internal temperature sensor. Specifically the left core — the heater has several heating elements and this code points at one of them. How the heater works: it is a resistive heating element fed directly from the high-voltage system. It heats coolant, which then passes its heat through an exchanger to the air flowing into the cabin. On older Teslas it is the main source of heat, because they do not yet have a heat pump — which means heating in freezing weather costs a lot of energy and noticeably eats into range. Why the unit measures its own temperature: a high-voltage heater can get very hot. Without a trustworthy temperature reading the thermal controller has no way to ensure it does not overheat, so it limits or disables it as a precaution. What follows on the road: the cabin heats poorly, demisting takes longer, and in freezing weather the battery conditions less well, which means slower charging and less regeneration. What to do: there is nothing to do yourself; the heater is a high-voltage component and belongs in service. In winter there is no point postponing it — without heat the car is usable but unpleasant, and the poorly conditioned battery costs you range. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
