What code UI_a004 means

The application layer of the touchscreen. Most codes from here are everyday notices the car shows the driver — an open frunk, a door left ajar, a status message about some feature. They are not hardware faults.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

UI_a004_FrunkOpen

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

Tesla kontroluje dva zámky, hlavní a pojistný, a stačí, aby hlásil otevřeno kterýkoli z nich.

The screen shows “Front trunk open” and this is one of the few messages worth stopping for as soon as it is safe to do so. What happened: the car found the front boot — the frunk — latch open while Drive, Reverse or Neutral is selected. Tesla checks two latches, the primary and the secondary, and it takes only one of them reporting open. Why this is not cosmetic: the bonnet on Model 3, Y and the newer S and X opens against the direction of travel. If it releases while you are moving, air pressure throws it up and folds it onto the windscreen. At that moment the driver loses forward visibility entirely, and the bonnet bends in a way that usually cannot be straightened. That is exactly why the car warns as soon as you shift, not later on the move. The most common situation: the frunk did not latch. The front bonnet needs closing properly, not just resting shut — the secondary latch catches it, the primary does not, and the car notices. It happens after loading, after a wash, and in frost when the latch ices up. What to do: stop, open the frunk fully and close it properly — on Model 3 and Y by pressing with both hands until you hear it click. The message clears once it is shut or when you select Park. If it appears with the bonnet visibly closed, the sensor is faulty or the latch is out of adjustment, and it needs checking. Reported by Cybertruck, Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, and Model Y.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
