What code UI_a033 means

The application layer of the touchscreen. Most codes from here are everyday notices the car shows the driver — an open frunk, a door left ajar, a status message about some feature. They are not hardware faults.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Proč to lidi překvapí: Tesla zkušební období občas aktivuje sama, plošně a bez toho, aby si o to majitel řekl. U většiny vozů to znamená adaptivní tempomat a asistenta udržování v pruhu.

Was tun: Es wird nichts repariert.

W większości aut oznacza to aktywny tempomat i asystenta utrzymania pasa.

The screen shows “Self-Driving trial expired” and the assistance features you had are suddenly gone. What happened: the trial period for Autopilot or the advanced assistance package has ended. This is not a fault and there is nothing to repair — the car is simply announcing that a time-limited loan of a feature has run out. Why it takes people by surprise: Tesla sometimes activates trial periods itself, across the fleet and without the owner asking. Over a few weeks you get used to the car changing lanes or navigating on the motorway, and then one day it stops working. Without this message it would look like a fault. What remains: the basic features paid for from the factory keep working. On most cars that means adaptive cruise control and lane keeping. Gone are the features from the paid package — typically lane change on command, Navigate on Autopilot and the parking assistant. What to do: nothing gets repaired. Either buy the package in the app or on the car's screen, or stay with the basic equipment. The code clears from the display by itself after fifteen seconds. A small note for used-car buyers: what the car could do on a test drive is not necessarily what has actually been bought with it. Always ask to see the equipment listed in the settings, not just have the feature demonstrated. Reported by Cybertruck, Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, and Model Y.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
