What code UI_a081 means

The application layer of the touchscreen. Most codes from here are everyday notices the car shows the driver — an open frunk, a door left ajar, a status message about some feature. They are not hardware faults.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

UI_a081_CellModemSearchExpired

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Vůz taky nemůže stahovat aktualizace, ztratí živá data o dopravě a přestane fungovat streamování hudby. Čím to nejčastěji bývá: prostě špatný signál. Co s tím: přejeďte jinam a zkuste to. Když vůz nemá signál ani venku na otevřeném prostranství, restartujte obrazovku podržením obou koleček. Když ani to nepomůže a stav trvá dny, patří to do servisu — bývá to modem nebo anténa. Hlásí ho Cybertruck a Model 3.

Zgłaszają go Cybertruck i Model 3.

A driver will not usually see this code on the screen, but will recognise it because the car does not appear in the app. What happened: the modem's cellular connection search timer expired. The car tried to connect, failed within the allotted time, and the modem gave up. The consequence is a loss of data connectivity. What stops working: the app cannot see the car and nothing can be done remotely — no preconditioning, no unlocking, no status check. The car also cannot download updates, loses live traffic data, and music streaming stops. Navigation itself keeps working because the maps are stored in the car, but planning based on current traffic and charger availability does not. What usually causes it: simply poor signal. An underground car park, a deep valley, thick concrete. The car tries to connect, fails, and the timer expires. This is entirely normal and means nothing. When it is something else: when it happens where there is signal. Tesla's service description offers a useful pointer — it is worth checking whether a modem reset loop record appeared alongside it. A modem that keeps restarting will never connect. What to do: drive somewhere else and try. If the car has no signal even in the open, restart the screen by holding both scroll wheels. If that does not help either and the state lasts for days, it belongs in service — usually the modem or the antenna. Reported by Cybertruck and Model 3.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
