What code UI_a138 means

The application layer of the touchscreen. Most codes from here are everyday notices the car shows the driver — an open frunk, a door left ajar, a status message about some feature. They are not hardware faults.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Hlásí ho Cybertruck a Model 3.

Zvlášť keď k tomu dôjde vo chvíli, keď si sadáte do auta. Was tun: warten.

Tesla potrafi zmieniać tę konfigurację zdalnie i dzieje się to częściej, niż można by sądzić. Zgłaszają go Cybertruck i Model 3.

The screen shows “Vehicle configuration update pending” and a few seconds later the screen restarts itself. What happened: the car received a gateway configuration change while parked, and to apply it the system has to reboot. Tesla's description puts it exactly that way — the infotainment system will reboot after a few seconds. What a configuration change is: every car stores in its control units what it can do and how it should behave — what equipment it has, which features are enabled, what parameters apply. Tesla can change that configuration remotely, and it happens more often than you would think. Typically when you buy a feature, when something previously disabled is enabled, or when a service centre adjusts something. Why it surprises people: a screen restart with no warning and without anyone asking for it looks like a fault. Especially when it comes at the moment you are getting into the car. But it is normal behaviour — which is precisely why Tesla shows this message at all. What to do: wait. The restart takes tens of seconds and then everything is as before, only with the new configuration. The car remains drivable throughout; only the screen reboots, not the drivetrain. When to pay attention: if the restart loops and the message keeps returning. That is no longer a change being applied but something that cannot complete — and that deserves a check. Reported by Cybertruck and Model 3.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
