What code UMC_a005 means

The Universal Mobile Connector — the portable charging cable for a wall socket. These codes report an overheating plug, voltage fluctuation or a disconnection. Usually the culprit is an old socket rather than a faulty cable.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

UMC_a005_inputUnderVoltage

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

Zakres, w którym pracuje, to 90 do 300 woltów — celowo szerokie okno, żeby radziła sobie z siecią amerykańską i europejską. Zmniejsz w aucie prąd ładowania — mniejszy pobór to mniejszy spadek napięcia. A jeśli gniazdko jest ciepłe albo poczerniałe, przestań go używać i wezwij elektryka. Zgłaszają go Cybertruck, Model 3, Model S i X od 2021 oraz Model Y.

The screen shows “Unable to charge with Mobile Connector” and charging from the portable charger will not start. What happened: Tesla's Mobile Connector, the one you carry in the boot, measures the voltage at the socket. If it falls below 90 volts it refuses to charge. Its working range is 90 to 300 volts — deliberately wide so it copes with both the American and European grids. Dropping below the lower limit simply means there is not enough voltage at the socket. What usually lies behind it here: an extension lead that is too long or has conductors that are too thin. At ten amps and above the voltage drop across it is enough to trip the charger. Then an old or loose socket with high contact resistance, long runs out to a garage or barn, an overloaded circuit with something else running on it, and a weak rural grid at peak times. What to do: plug the charger straight into the socket, not through an extension lead or a cable reel. If you must use an extension, it has to be short and of a decent conductor size. Try another socket, ideally on a different circuit. Reduce the charging current in the car — a lower draw means a smaller voltage drop. And if the socket is warm or discoloured, stop using it and call an electrician. Reported by Cybertruck, Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, and Model Y.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
