What code VCFRONT_a102 means

Vehicle Controller Front — the front body controller. It handles the 12 V supply, the frunk, lights, wipers, pumps and cooling valves. One of the most frequently reported groups, because 12 V battery problems land here too.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

VCFRONT_a102_PTC_MIA

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

Když jednotka umlkne, řídicí jednotka o ní neví a s ohřevem nepočítá.

A driver will not usually see this code on the screen directly, but will recognise it by the heating not working as it should. What happened: the front controller stopped receiving regular messages from the PTC resistive heater's control unit. That heater works on the principle that the material's resistance rises with temperature, so it limits itself and cannot overheat — on older Teslas it heats the cabin and conditions the battery. When its unit goes silent, the controller does not know about it and does not count on its heat. What it means on the road: in winter you notice immediately. The cabin does not warm up or warms weakly, demisting takes a long time, and the car may report limited preconditioning. Beyond comfort there is a second effect — without heating the battery conditions less well, which in frost means slower charging and less regeneration. Possible causes: a faulty heater unit, a blown fuse in its supply, a damaged connector, or a broken communication bus. On older cars it also appears after work on the front of the vehicle. What to do: this is a high-voltage component, so it is not something to work on yourself. The car is drivable, but in winter it is neither pleasant nor practical. Have the diagnostics read and the fault repaired — and expect slower charging in the cold until then. Reported by Cybertruck, Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, and Model Y.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
