What code VCFRONT_a209 means

Vehicle Controller Front — the front body controller. It handles the 12 V supply, the frunk, lights, wipers, pumps and cooling valves. One of the most frequently reported groups, because 12 V battery problems land here too.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Brake fluid switch faulted.

Co s tím: jeďte opatrně a nechte to opravit brzy. A mezitím si sami zkontrolujte hladinu v nádobce pohledem — když je pod ryskou, nejezděte a volejte servis. Hlásí ho Model 3 a Model S.

Zgłaszają go Model 3 i Model S.

The screen shows “Brake fluid level sensor service required” and this is a message not to speculate about. What happened: the front vehicle controller cannot determine the brake fluid level. Tesla's description also names the likely cause — the level sensor is disconnected or there is a short circuit in its wiring. Why this is not cosmetic: Tesla sums up the impact without dressing it up — the brakes may not work as expected. What matters is what this code does not say: it does not say the fluid is low. It says the car does not know how much there is. And that is worse, because you lose the warning that would come if fluid started leaking. Why this is fundamental with brakes: the braking system is a closed circuit and the fluid has nowhere to go. If it does go, there are two possibilities — worn pads or a leak. The second means the pedal goes to the floor at some point. The level sensor is exactly what should catch that development in time, and right now it is blind. What usually causes it: a loose or corroded connector on the brake fluid reservoir, a chafed cable, a faulty float switch. The connector sits in the front of the car, where there is damp and, in winter, salt. What to do: drive gently and have it repaired soon. In the meantime check the level in the reservoir yourself by eye — if it is below the mark, do not drive and call service. Reported by Model 3 and Model S.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
