What code VCRIGHT_a141 means

Vehicle Controller Right — the right body controller. It runs the right-hand doors, windows, mirrors, seats and their heating.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

VCRIGHT_a141_hvacUpperModeFault

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

HVAC Upper Mode actuator faulted

Upper Mode actuator detected a fault (check context data for type of fault)

Upper Mode actuator is not faulted

Hlásí ho Model 3 a Model Y.

Hlási ho Model 3 a Model Y.

Zgłaszają go Model 3 i Model Y.

A driver will not usually see this code on the screen, but will recognise it because the climate control is not doing what it should. What happened: the upper mode flap in the climate system is reporting a fault in its actuator. That flap decides where the air goes — to the windscreen, to the face vents, or down to the footwell. When it stops moving it stays wherever it happened to be, and the air keeps going there whatever you set on the screen. What it means in practice: Tesla's description notes that both the heater and the air conditioning may be disabled. In practice it usually blows, just not where you want it. It is at its most unpleasant in winter — if the flap is stuck in the footwell position, the windscreen will not clear, and at that point it is a safety problem rather than a comfort question. What usually causes it: a faulty stepper motor on the flap, a broken or dislodged linkage, a damaged connector. You often hear it as knocking or clicking behind the dashboard when the climate system starts up — the unit is trying to move the flap into position and failing. What to do: try letting the car sleep and waking it; occasionally the flap re-references itself after a restart. If not, it belongs in service — the actuator sits deep behind the dashboard and is not reachable at home. Until then, expect that demisting may not work. Reported by Model 3 and Model Y.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
