What code VCRIGHT_a196 means

Vehicle Controller Right — the right body controller. It runs the right-hand doors, windows, mirrors, seats and their heating.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

VCRIGHT_a196_VEHCANOverterminate

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

adjustable termination is active and the DI is connected to CAN

An ordinary driver will never see this code — it is a purely service record, and its audience is technicians. What happened: the car's communication bus has to be terminated with a resistor at both ends, otherwise signals reflect and data gets corrupted. Tesla makes this termination switchable so it can adapt to which units are currently connected. This code means the termination is active when it should not be — specifically when the drive control unit is on the bus, bringing its own termination with it. Why that matters: double termination lowers the signal level and errors start appearing on the bus. It need not show up immediately and need not bring the whole car down, but communication between units becomes less reliable — and a great many seemingly unrelated messages depend on that. When it happens: almost always after service work. A unit replacement, work on the wiring, a diagnostic session where someone switched the termination on and did not switch it off. What is unusual about this code: it does not clear itself. Tesla's description says it clears only by calling a diagnostic routine that switches the termination off. So it is one of the few things that genuinely has to be clicked away in diagnostics. What to do: this belongs in service, but it is a quick job — a software command, not a parts replacement. Reported by Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, and Model Y.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
