What code VCSEC_a201 means

Vehicle Controller Security — vehicle security, the alarm, key fobs, phone-as-key over Bluetooth and pairing the tyre pressure sensors. These codes often appear after changing a key, a wheel or a battery.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

VCSEC_a201_leftEndpointLostComm

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The security controller did not receive event for more than 10sec from the left endpoint

VCSEC commands to add services to rear endpoint is timed out

Driver experiences with code VCSEC_a201

This part is written by you. If you have had code VCSEC_a201, tell us when it appeared, what brought it on and how it ended — for the next person, one such sentence is often worth more than the entire service documentation.

Když drží, jde o závadu a patří do servisu — jinak zůstanete stát před zamčeným autem. Hlásí ho Cybertruck, Model 3 a Model S a X od 2021.

A driver will not usually see this code on the screen, but will recognise it at once by what stops working: the phone key. What happened: for the car to know you are approaching and unlock, it needs Bluetooth antennas distributed around the vehicle — Tesla calls them endpoints. From the signal strength at several points at once it computes where the phone is and decides whether you are standing at the car, sitting inside, or somewhere nearby. The left antenna has stopped reporting — the security controller heard no response from it for more than ten seconds. What it means in practice: Tesla's description says it outright — the phone key will not work. Missing antennas mean the car cannot reliably locate the phone, and it would rather block unlocking than risk opening while you are twenty metres away. What usually lies behind it: a loose or damaged antenna connector, broken wiring, a faulty antenna or its supply. On older cars it appears after work on a door card or sill, that is after accident repair or accessory fitting. What to do: carry the card or the fob, which work independently. The code clears once the antenna responds again. If it persists, it is a fault and belongs in service — otherwise you will eventually be standing in front of a locked car. Reported by Cybertruck, Model 3, and Model S and X from 2021.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
