What code VCSEC_a260 means

Vehicle Controller Security — vehicle security, the alarm, key fobs, phone-as-key over Bluetooth and pairing the tyre pressure sensors. These codes often appear after changing a key, a wheel or a battery.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

A present phone key disconnected

The last presnt phone key disconnected due to a phone user interaction

Phone key reconnect or user leaving the vehicle

Co najczęściej rozłącza telefon: wyłączony albo zrestartowany Bluetooth, tryb oszczędzania energii usypiający aplikację, ręczne zamknięcie aplikacji, aktualizacja systemu telefonu, odebrane uprawnienie do lokalizacji albo Bluetooth.

The screen shows “Walk-Away lock unavailable” and the car does not lock itself after you leave. What happened: the phone key disconnected from the car. Tesla's description adds an important point — it may be caused by something the user did with their phone. So it is not necessarily a fault in the car. Why this matters for locking in particular: walk-away locking works by the car watching your phone move away and locking at a certain point. If the phone disconnects sooner, the car has no way to tell you have left — and it would rather not lock than lock at the moment you have just nipped round to put the shopping in the boot. What most often disconnects the phone: Bluetooth switched off or restarted, a battery-saver mode putting the app to sleep, manually closing the app, a phone system update, revoked location or Bluetooth permissions. On Android, aggressive battery management killing the app in the background is a classic. What to do: check that the app is running in the background and has Bluetooth and location permission. On a phone with strict battery optimisation, exempt the Tesla app from it. And above all — until then, make sure the car really is locked before you walk away. Reported by Cybertruck, Model 3, and Model S and X from 2021.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
