Tesla charging

Charging a Tesla at home

Home is the cheapest and most convenient place to charge — the car sits overnight and is full by morning. The difference between a socket and a wallbox is mainly time.

Charging time

Power 10 → 80 % 0 → 100 % Range added, roughly / 8 h
Schuko 230 V / 10 A 2,3 kW 25 h 7 min 35 h 52 min 110 km
Schuko 230 V / 16 A 3,7 kW 15 h 36 min 22 h 18 min 178 km
Wallbox 230 V / 32 A 7,4 kW 7 h 48 min 11 h 9 min 355 km
Wallbox 400 V / 16 A 11,0 kW 5 h 15 min 7 h 30 min 528 km
Wallbox 400 V / 32 A 22,0 kW 2 h 38 min 3 h 45 min 1 056 km

An estimate for steady charging. In practice battery temperature, state of charge and the power the station actually delivers all play a part. Capacity used: 75,0 kWh (catalogue).

Can a Tesla be charged from an ordinary socket?

It can, but slowly — an ordinary socket delivers only a few kilowatts, so a full charge takes more than a day. That is fine for topping up a few dozen kilometres daily; for regular charging a wallbox is better.

Wallbox

Pevně instalovaná nabíječka s vlastním jištěním a chráničem.

Cost of the charge

Home is almost always cheaper. Superchargers and other fast chargers make sense on the road, where you are mainly paying for speed. You can compare the two directly in the calculator.

Common questions about charging

Can a Tesla be charged from an ordinary socket?
It can, but slowly — an ordinary socket delivers only a few kilowatts, so a full charge takes more than a day. That is fine for topping up a few dozen kilometres daily; for regular charging a wallbox is better.
What connector does Tesla use?
In Europe, Type 2 for AC and CCS for DC fast charging. Both go through the same socket on the car. Superchargers in Europe use CCS as well.
How long does charging a Tesla take?
At an ultra-fast charger a Tesla goes from 10 to 80 % in roughly twenty to thirty minutes. On a wallbox at home it is hours, and from an ordinary socket a whole day.
What does it cost to charge a Tesla?
It depends mostly on where you charge. At home you pay your own electricity rate; at a public fast charger, typically several times that. The calculator above works out the figure for your car.
