What code GTW_w023 means

The Gateway — the hub through which the car's controllers talk to each other, and the route software updates take. Codes from here often mean some controller has gone quiet on the bus; the real fault is usually in that controller, not the gateway.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Car Needs Service: Car Will Not Charge

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

Na displeji se objeví „Car Needs Service: Car Will Not Charge“, v novějším znění „Incompatible drive system software detected“. Vůz nenabíjí a nejede. Není to mechanická závada brzdy. Zkuste nejdřív, jestli vůz nenabízí čekající aktualizaci a jestli má dost dobré připojení k síti, aby si ji stáhl — někdy se to vyřeší samo dokončením té přerušené. Když ne, objednejte servis; vůz zatím zůstane stát. Hlásí ho Model 3, Model S a X od 2021 a Model Y.

Im Display erscheint „Car Needs Service: Car Will Not Charge“, in neuerer Fassung „Incompatible drive system software detected“. Was tun: Das richten Sie nicht selbst.

Na ekranie pojawia się „Car Needs Service: Car Will Not Charge”, w nowszym brzmieniu „Incompatible drive system software detected”.

The screen shows “Car Needs Service: Car Will Not Charge”, or in newer wording “Incompatible drive system software detected”. The car neither charges nor drives. What happened: the vehicle gateway — the unit that makes sure every control unit is speaking the same language — found the right-hand electric park brake unit running a different firmware version from the rest of the car. Tesla treats this strictly: until the versions line up, the car is not released even for driving. The reason is easy to follow — with a braking system you cannot risk two units working to different rules and some function dropping out without anyone noticing. When it happens: almost always around software. An unfinished or interrupted update, a park brake unit replaced without a subsequent version match, a power loss in the middle of an installation. It is not a mechanical brake fault. What to do: this is not a self-fix. Matching firmware between units is done by a service centre or by a remote update from Tesla. First check whether the car is offering a pending update and whether its network connection is good enough to download it — sometimes finishing the interrupted update resolves it. If not, book service; the car stays put in the meantime. Reported by Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, and Model Y.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
