What code GTW_u019 means

The Gateway — the hub through which the car's controllers talk to each other, and the route software updates take. Codes from here often mean some controller has gone quiet on the bus; the real fault is usually in that controller, not the gateway.

Severity — u

Not a defect. The car is waiting for you — press the brake, close a door, top up a fluid, change a setting.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Battery Power Very Low: Cabin Overheat Protection Disabled

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

GTW_u019_overheatSocTooLow

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

Im Display erscheint „Battery Power Very Low: Cabin Overheat Protection Disabled“. Was tun: Laden Sie das Fahrzeug.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Battery Power Very Low: Cabin Overheat Protection Disabled”. This is not a fault, it is an energy-saving measure. What happened: cabin overheat protection is the feature that watches the interior temperature after you park and turns on ventilation or air conditioning once it passes the set limit. It runs even when the car is locked and you are long gone — and it costs energy from the traction battery. When the state of charge drops below a certain threshold, the car switches the feature off to keep what is left for something more important: waking up and driving at all. What it means in practice: on a hot day the cabin will heat up fully, just like any other car. If you leave animals or electronics inside, this is a warning to take seriously — the protection you are relying on is off. What to do: charge the car. The feature returns on its own once the state of charge is high enough again. If you often drive at a low state of charge and this message keeps appearing, consider setting a higher charge limit. And if it shows up even at a decent state of charge, something else is going on and the battery data is worth checking. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
