What code GTW_w019 means

The Gateway — the hub through which the car's controllers talk to each other, and the route software updates take. Codes from here often mean some controller has gone quiet on the bus; the real fault is usually in that controller, not the gateway.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Car Needs Service: Contact Tesla Service

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Co s tím: nejdřív zkontrolujte, jestli vůz nemá čekající aktualizaci a slušné připojení k síti, aby si ji stáhl — dokončením přerušené instalace se to často spraví. A protože vůz nejede, počítejte s odtahem. Hlásí ho Cybertruck a Model 3.

Zgłaszają go Cybertruck i Model 3.

The screen shows “Car Needs Service: Contact Tesla Service”, or “Incompatible drive system software detected”, and the car neither drives nor charges. What happened: the gateway found the charge port control unit running a different firmware version from the one the rest of the car expects. Why Tesla handles this so firmly: by its own description the car cannot drive or charge until the mismatch is resolved — and it gives the reason directly, namely to make sure charge port functionality is not limited by a firmware mismatch. The charge port unit supervises what is plugged in, how the latch is secured, and whether it is safe to put current onto the cable. Working with it when it may not understand the rest of the car is a bad idea at several hundred amps. When it happens: almost always around software. An unfinished or interrupted update, a charge port unit replaced without a version match, a power loss mid-installation. What to do: first check whether the car has a pending update and a decent network connection to download it — completing the interrupted install often fixes it. If not, it is a service matter; flashing a unit's firmware is not a home job. And since the car will not drive, expect a tow. Reported by Cybertruck and Model 3.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
