What code GTW_w099 means

The Gateway — the hub through which the car's controllers talk to each other, and the route software updates take. Codes from here often mean some controller has gone quiet on the bus; the real fault is usually in that controller, not the gateway.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Na displeji se objeví „Parking Brake Needs Service: Car May Be Free Rolling“ a to zní děsivě. Když ne, patří to do servisu; přehrání firmwaru jednotky si sami neuděláte.

Na ekranie pojawia się „Parking Brake Needs Service: Car May Be Free Rolling” i brzmi to przerażająco. To uwaga, którą dobrze znać, bo „coś z kierownicą” u większości ludzi natychmiast wywołuje pytanie o poduszkę.

The screen shows “Parking Brake Needs Service: Car May Be Free Rolling” and that sounds alarming. With this code, though, the message is misleading, and it is worth knowing why. What actually happened: the gateway found the steering wheel controller running a different firmware version from the one the rest of the car expects. It has nothing to do with the parking brake; the on-screen text does not fit here. What is genuinely affected: functions tied to the steering wheel — the buttons, the scroll wheels and their controls. Tesla explicitly adds that this mismatch is not expected to affect the steering wheel airbag. That is a note worth knowing, because “something with the steering wheel” immediately raises the airbag question for most people. When it happens: almost always around software. An unfinished or interrupted update, a steering wheel or its control unit replaced without a subsequent version match. What to do: check whether the car is offering a pending update and let it complete on a good connection — that often settles it. If not, it belongs in service; flashing a control unit's firmware is not a DIY job. And do not let the message frighten you: before you start worrying about the brakes, have someone read out which code is actually behind it. Reported by Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, and Model Y.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
