What code APP_w217 means

The application layer of Autopilot. Drives adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, lane changes and sign recognition. Faults here usually mean an assistance feature switched itself off temporarily — typically due to poor visibility or incomplete camera calibration.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

APP_w217_lcUnavailableSpeeding

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Lateral Control (LC) Unavailable due to Speeding

Vehicle speed is more then 95mph (or 160kmph) except in Germany

Watchdog event is triggering AP reboot.

Any monitored task or system component fails.

Autosteer will abort if active. Three watchdog events before sleep would result in AP features unavailable until sleep

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Self-Driving features unavailable for this drive” and the assistants will not engage for the rest of the journey. What happened: the car was travelling faster than roughly 160 km/h (95 mph) and lateral control — lane keeping and Autosteer — locked out because of it. This is not a one-off refusal like the lower threshold; this lasts until the end of the drive. It unlocks only after parking and setting off afresh. Worth distinguishing: Tesla has two speed thresholds for Autopilot. At around 140 km/h engagement is refused, at around 160 km/h the feature is disabled for the whole drive. This code does not apply in Germany, where the rules for unrestricted motorways are set differently. One more thing Tesla's service description mentions: the same code also results when the Autopilot watchdog repeatedly reboots the unit. Three such events in a row disable the assistants for the rest of the drive. That is no longer about speed but about the unit behaving unstably. What to do: if you really were going very fast, there is nothing to resolve — stop and set off again. But if the message appears at ordinary speeds when you clearly were not doing 160 km/h, that points to the second cause and it is worth having the diagnostics read out. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
