What code APP_w261 means

The application layer of Autopilot. Drives adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, lane changes and sign recognition. Faults here usually mean an assistance feature switched itself off temporarily — typically due to poor visibility or incomplete camera calibration.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Nechte to vyčíst a hlavně to zmiňte, pokud vám Autopilot vypadává.

V Autopilotovi prepája hlavný procesor s ďalšími výpočtovými jednotkami a s pamäťou — preteká ňou obraz zo všetkých kamier a výsledky jeho spracovania. Nechajte to vyčítať a hlavne to spomeňte, ak vám Autopilot vypadáva. Was tun: selbst nichts.

To autostrada wewnątrz jednostki. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

A driver will not usually see this code on the screen — it is a service record from the Autopilot computer and points inside the unit. What happened: the Autopilot computer detected internal hardware errors on the PCIe bus. What PCIe is: a high-speed data bus over which the processor communicates with the other chips inside a computer. In a desktop PC it carries data between the processor and the graphics card. In Autopilot it links the main processor with the other compute units and with memory — the video from every camera and the results of processing it flow through there. It is the motorway inside the unit. Why this is not a software matter: PCIe errors are reported at hardware level. It does not mean a program misbehaved — it means something went wrong transferring data between chips. That is usually a question of solder joints, temperature, power supply, or chip ageing. What it can foreshadow: recurring hardware errors on the internal bus are a typical precursor to the unit crashing or restarting. If messages about Autopilot reboots or system crashes join this code over time, they are connected. What to do: nothing yourself. Have it read out and, above all, mention it if your Autopilot is dropping out. This code is the trace showing the problem is not in the software. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
