What code BMS_a061 means

The Battery Management System — the brain of the high-voltage battery. It watches individual cell voltages, temperature, isolation resistance and the permitted power output. On a used car this is the most closely watched group of codes, because battery health shows up here. Codes about isolation or cell instability are among those worth having checked promptly.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

BMS_a061_SW_BrickV_Change

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

„BrickV” to więc napięcie grupy ogniw, a „Change” oznacza zmianę. Jeśli jednak dołączą do niego komunikaty o ograniczonym ładowaniu, o nierównowadze albo o izolacji, przestaje to być jednostkowa sprawa i warto zlecić sprawdzenie baterii. Zgłaszają go Model 3, Model S i X od 2021 oraz Model Y.

With this code it is best to be honest from the start: Tesla has not published a description for it. What can be said with certainty comes from its internal firmware name, which reads BMS_a061_SW_BrickV_Change. What the name tells us: a “brick” is the term for a group of cells wired in parallel inside the pack. A Tesla battery is assembled from many such groups, and the battery management measures the voltage of each one separately. So “BrickV” is a cell group's voltage and “Change” means a change. The code concerns a recorded change in voltage at one of the groups. Why group voltages are watched: the differences between groups are the main thing that reveals the battery's condition. Every group should sit at a similar voltage; when one starts behaving differently, that is often the first trace. In practice, codes in this family come down to wear and rising internal resistance with age, oxidised contacts on the monitoring boards, a faulty sensor or its wiring — and plain cold: in winter the spread between groups widens temporarily and evens out again once the pack warms. What to do: on its own it is no cause for alarm and the car usually drives normally. But if messages about limited charging, imbalance or isolation join it, it stops being an isolated entry and the battery is worth having checked. Reported by Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, and Model Y.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
