What code BMS_f062 means

The Battery Management System — the brain of the high-voltage battery. It watches individual cell voltages, temperature, isolation resistance and the permitted power output. On a used car this is the most closely watched group of codes, because battery health shows up here. Codes about isolation or cell instability are among those worth having checked promptly.

Severity — f

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Car Needs Service: PULL OVER SAFELY

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The Battery Management System (BMS) has detected that there is a power supply issue with the contactor.

Vozidlo preto radšej zastaví riadene, kým to má pod kontrolou, než by čakalo, kým sa to stane samo v nevhodnú chvíľu. Čo ďalej: odťah do servisu.

A rozwarcie stycznika w trakcie jazdy oznacza natychmiastową utratę napędu. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Car Needs Service: PULL OVER SAFELY” and the car is asking you to stop safely. What happened: the battery management found that the supply to a pack contactor has dropped below the permitted threshold. A contactor is the power switch that connects the high voltage — and to stay closed, current has to flow continuously through its coil. If the supply falls, the contactor cannot hold itself closed. Why that means stopping: a contactor without enough power can open at any moment. And a contactor opening while driving means an immediate loss of drive. So the car would rather stop in a controlled way while it still has the situation in hand than wait for it to happen by itself at the worst moment. What usually causes it: most often low voltage in the 12-volt system, because that is exactly what feeds the contactor coils. That leads back to a 12-volt battery at the end of its life or a converter not recharging it. Another possibility is damaged wiring or a connector in the contactor supply. What to do: get out of the traffic lane as the message says. Do not try to continue — losing drive at speed is precisely what the car is trying to prevent. What next: tow to a service centre. And it is worth having the 12-volt system checked straight away, since that is the most common cause behind this code. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
