What code BMS_a084 means

The Battery Management System — the brain of the high-voltage battery. It watches individual cell voltages, temperature, isolation resistance and the permitted power output. On a used car this is the most closely watched group of codes, because battery health shows up here. Codes about isolation or cell instability are among those worth having checked promptly.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

BMS_a084_SW_Sleep_Wake_Aborted

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Diagnostic alert for sleep and wake transitions

BMS has detected that CP fault asserted

BMS was unable to close contactors

Proto to raději neudělá.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

A driver will not usually see this code on the screen — it is a diagnostic record that the car failed to go to sleep or to wake up. What happened: a Tesla puts itself to sleep after parking so it does not drain the battery, and wakes again when needed. Part of that is connecting or disconnecting the high voltage through the contactors. This code means the transition between sleep and wake did not complete. The service description adds two specifics: the battery management registered a fault from the charge port, and it was unable to close the contactors. Why the charge port in particular: if the car sees a fault on the charging side, it cannot be sure whether connecting high voltage is safe. If, say, a cable were plugged in while reporting a nonsensical state, closing the contactors would mean putting voltage into something whose condition the car does not know. So it would rather not. What an owner might notice: the car wakes more slowly, the app cannot reach it for a while, or it does not start charging when it should. Sometimes you notice nothing at all. What to do: if the car drives and charges normally, an isolated record means nothing. But if charging repeatedly fails to start or the car wakes badly, have the charge port and its wiring checked — that is exactly where this code points. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
