What code BMS_a085 means

The Battery Management System — the brain of the high-voltage battery. It watches individual cell voltages, temperature, isolation resistance and the permitted power output. On a used car this is the most closely watched group of codes, because battery health shows up here. Codes about isolation or cell instability are among those worth having checked promptly.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

BMS detects a mismatch between actual and commanded pack contactor set state

HVP comms are ok AND pack contactors were closed AND pack contactors are now open/opening AND BMS_packContactorRequest has remained closed

Hlásí ho Model 3 a Model S.

Na displeji sa objaví „Vehicle shutting down - PULL OVER SAFELY“ a je to hláška, pri ktorej sa nediskutuje.

Zgłaszają go Model 3 i Model S.

The screen shows “Vehicle shutting down - PULL OVER SAFELY” and this is a message there is nothing to discuss about. What happened: the battery management compared the actual state of the pack contactors with the state it wanted them in — and they do not match. Specifically, as Tesla describes it: the contactors were closed, communication with the high-voltage unit was working, and yet they opened, or are opening, without the battery management having asked for it. Why this is so serious: the contactors are the main switch for the entire high-voltage system. If they open while driving, the car loses drive at a stroke. And worse, the battery management does not know why — nobody requested it. Either a contactor failed mechanically, or something opened it outside the normal path, or communication has broken down far enough that the units no longer understand each other. In none of those cases does the car have the situation under control. What to do: get out of the traffic lane as the message says. The car is shutting itself down and there is no point fighting it. Expect drive to disappear immediately — steering assistance and brakes remain functional, but require more effort. What next: tow to a service centre. A mismatched contactor state is something where the cause is sought around the battery and the high-voltage unit, and it is not settled by clearing a code. Reported by Model 3 and Model S.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
