What code BMS_w101 means

The Battery Management System — the brain of the high-voltage battery. It watches individual cell voltages, temperature, isolation resistance and the permitted power output. On a used car this is the most closely watched group of codes, because battery health shows up here. Codes about isolation or cell instability are among those worth having checked promptly.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Car Shutting Down: PULL OVER SAFELY

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The Battery Management System (BMS) has detected that the Battery Monitor Board (BMB) is overheating.

Na displeji se objeví „Car Shutting Down: PULL OVER SAFELY“. Bývá to vadná monitorovací deska, závada v chlazení baterie nebo problém s tepelným managementem. Týká se Modelu S 2012–2020 a Modelu X 2015–2020.

Im Display erscheint „Car Shutting Down: PULL OVER SAFELY“.

Na ekranie pojawia się „Car Shutting Down: PULL OVER SAFELY”. Tesla woli więc zatrzymać auto, dopóki panuje nad sytuacją, niż jechać dalej i mieć nadzieję. Co robić: zjedź z pasa ruchu w bezpieczne miejsce i opuść auto. Nie próbuj go restartować i ruszać ponownie. Bywa to uszkodzona płyta monitorująca, awaria chłodzenia baterii albo problem z zarządzaniem termicznym. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Car Shutting Down: PULL OVER SAFELY”. This is one of the few messages there is nothing to discuss about — stop. What happened: inside the battery there are monitoring boards measuring the voltage and temperature of each cell group. One of them is reporting that it is overheating beyond the permitted limit. The car responds by shutting down the entire high-voltage system, because overheating electronics inside the pack itself is a situation nobody wants to let develop. Why so decisively: in the enclosed space of a battery with several hundred volts and cells capable of releasing a great deal of energy, heat is the most dangerous variable. Tesla would rather bring the car to a stop while the situation is under control than keep going and hope. What to do: get out of the traffic lane to somewhere safe and leave the vehicle. Do not try to restart it and drive on. If you smell anything or see smoke, move away from the car and call the fire service — nothing on a high-voltage battery is put out on your own. What next: the car belongs on a flatbed to a service centre. The code clears once the board reports a temperature below the limit, but that is no reason to drive on — it does not remove the cause of the overheating. It is usually a faulty monitoring board, a fault in the battery cooling, or a thermal management problem. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
