What code CHG_f090 means

The charger inside the car that converts AC from the socket into DC for the battery. These codes cover AC charging problems — grid fluctuations, high line impedance, overheating.

Severity — f

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

This alert is set when the measured line voltage offset is above a maximum threshhold.

Když nenabíjí nikde, jde o palubní nabíječku a patří to do servisu.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

A driver will not usually see this code directly on the screen, but it shows itself when charging fails to start or is interrupted. What happened: the onboard charger measures the voltage coming in from the mains and compares it with what it expects. The service description puts it precisely — the measured line voltage offset exceeded the maximum threshold. In other words: what the charger sees at its input does not make sense. Why the charger watches this: charging is the one moment the car is galvanically connected to the supply grid. The charger has to be certain what voltage is present at its input, because the whole conversion to DC for the battery is controlled from it. If the measurement does not add up, it cannot safely continue. What usually causes it: fluctuating or weak mains voltage, which mainly affects older installations and out-of-the-way places. Beyond that, an overloaded circuit with something else running on it, a long or undersized extension lead, a worn socket with high contact resistance. And of course a fault in the charger itself. What to do: rule out the outside causes first. Plug straight into the socket without an extension, try another circuit, reduce the charging current in the car. If the car charges without trouble elsewhere, the problem is at the place you tried. If it charges nowhere, it is the onboard charger and belongs in service. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
