What code CHG_f091 means

The charger inside the car that converts AC from the socket into DC for the battery. These codes cover AC charging problems — grid fluctuations, high line impedance, overheating.

Severity — f

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Unable to Charge: Close Charge Port Door, Press Brake Pedal, Then Try Again

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

This alert indicates the primary charger has measured a value outside of the normal ranges.

Čím to bývá: zoxidované nebo znečištěné kolíky v nabíjecím portu, voda a led v konektoru, opotřebený kabel u veřejné stanice, poškozený adaptér. Co s tím: nejdřív udělejte, co hláška říká — zavřete dvířka nabíjecího portu, sešlápněte brzdu a zkuste to znovu. Když to nepomůže, vytáhněte kabel, podívejte se do portu a na koncovku, případně opatrně otřete a nechte vyschnout. Zkuste jiný kabel nebo jiný stojan. Pokud vůz nenabíjí ani jinde a jiným kabelem, je závada v nabíjecím portu vozu a patří do servisu.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Unable to Charge: Close Charge Port Door, Press Brake Pedal, Then Try Again” and charging will not start. The message comes with instructions, which is rare — but it is worth knowing what sits behind it. What happened: the charger measured a value outside the normal range. Specifically this concerns the proximity signal — a conductor in the charging connector by which the car recognises that the cable really is properly inserted. When the measured value falls outside expected limits, the car cannot be sure the cable is latched, and refuses to charge. This is a safety interlock: charging at high current through a connector that is not fully seated would mean arcing and overheating. What usually causes it: oxidised or dirty pins in the charge port, water and ice in the connector, a worn cable at a public station, a damaged adapter. Occasionally just a cable that is not pushed fully home. What to do: first do what the message says — close the charge port door, press the brake pedal, and try again. If that does not help, unplug the cable, look into the port and at the connector, wipe carefully and let it dry. Try a different cable or a different stall. If the car will not charge elsewhere with another cable either, the fault is in the car's charge port and belongs in service. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
