What code CP_a007 means

The car's charge port — latch, connector lock, indicator light and proximity sensor. These codes typically appear when the connector will not lock or the car does not register that it is plugged in.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Was tun: Einmal nichts.

A driver will not normally see this code on the screen — it is a service record from the charge port control unit. What happened: a watchdog timer expired inside the unit. A watchdog is standard protection in every control unit: the program has to report at regular intervals that it is running. If that report does not arrive within the set time, the circuit restarts it automatically. The assumption is that the program has hung and will not recover on its own. What it means in practice: the charge port unit restarted itself. If that happened during charging, the session was interrupted and needs starting again. If the car was simply parked, you most likely noticed nothing. How to read it: a one-off watchdog is an everyday occurrence that most control units experience in their lifetime. Software occasionally hangs, the circuit restarts it, and life goes on — that is what the protection is for. It gets written to the log but means nothing. When to pay attention: when the code repeats. A unit restarting regularly has either a software fault or a supply problem. And because this is the unit that supervises charging, it shows up as charging sessions cutting out — exactly the kind of problem that is hard to track down, because it only happens now and then. What to do: once, nothing. Repeatedly, have the diagnostics read out and mention that it recurs. Reported by Cybertruck, Model 3, and Model S and X from 2021.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
