What code CP_a009 means

The car's charge port — latch, connector lock, indicator light and proximity sensor. These codes typically appear when the connector will not lock or the car does not register that it is plugged in.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Hlásí ho Cybertruck a Model 3.

Zgłaszają go Cybertruck i Model 3.

The screen shows “Unable to charge - Service is required” and charging never starts. What happened: the charge port control unit cannot sense the high-voltage cover of the port. This is not the charge port door you open to plug in — it is an internal cover shielding the high-voltage contacts from touch and moisture. Why that means no charging: without a confirmed cover the car has no certainty that the high-voltage contacts are shielded. Putting several hundred volts onto them while something that should not be accessible might be is precisely the risk you do not take. So the car declines to charge at all. What usually causes it: a cover removed and not refitted after service work — the most common cause, and it mostly affects cars after a charge port repair. Beyond that, a damaged or badly seated cover, a faulty presence sensor, or a damaged connector on that sensor. What to try: if the car has recently been worked on around the charge port, it is very likely the cover was not put back or is not seated. It is worth asking the workshop that did the job — it is usually a quick fix. What to do: do not handle the high-voltage side of the charge port yourself. Book service. Until then you cannot charge, so bear in mind that the energy in the battery is finite. Reported by Cybertruck and Model 3.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
