What code CP_a010 means

The car's charge port — latch, connector lock, indicator light and proximity sensor. These codes typically appear when the connector will not lock or the car does not register that it is plugged in.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

Prohlédněte a nechte vyschnout nabíjecí port, zkontrolujte kolíky. Když to nepomůže a vůz nenabíjí ani na Superchargeru, je na řadě servis. Kód hlásí Cybertruck, Model 3, Model S a X od 2021, Model Y i Semi.

Obejrzyj i osusz gniazdo ładowania, sprawdź styki.

The screen shows “Charging equipment not recognized” and charging never starts. What is going on: a single wire between the charger and the car carries what is called the pilot signal. Through it the charger tells the car how much current it may draw and what state it is in, using the voltage and duty cycle of a square wave. The charge port control unit measures that signal, and here it reads values that make no sense: the voltage, period or duty cycle fall outside the expected range and cannot be mapped to any valid state. The car does not know what is plugged in, so it declines to charge. In practice this usually means a faulty or cheap charger, a damaged cable, wet or corroded contacts in the charge port, or an adapter that does not get along with the car. Owner reports often involve older home wallboxes and non-branded cables. What to do: try a different charger or cable — if charging starts elsewhere, the fault is outside the car. Look into the charge port, let it dry, check the pins. If that does not help and the car will not charge at a Supercharger either, it is a job for service. Reported by Cybertruck, Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, Model Y and Semi.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
